Coupled pendulums Simulation created by Walter Fendt, 1998
This animation shows the movement of two single pendulums coupled by
a spring with a low rigidity constant. Apart from the representation of their swing
in real time, the animation displays a diagram of the motion of each pendulum.
This allows easy visualisation of the transfer of energy from one pendulum to
the other. You can carry out several experiments by changing the initial positions
(from -10 degrees to the left, to +10 degrees to the right), thus exploring
the system's different modes. A "slow motion" box allows you to divide the speed
of swing by five. You can also start and stop or continue the simulation using
the two corresponding buttons.
