Why should we protect plants ? | The role and work of botanical conservation centres
Because without plants, life on Earth is impossible. Thanks to photosynthesis, green plants absorb CO2 and produce oxygen, playing an essential role in regulating our atmosphere. They are the first link in the food chain, supplying practically all of our food. They can also be used for all kinds of medicinal, domestic, industrial or cultural purposes.
Ecosystems can only be maintained through the co-existence of many species, but this planetary ecological equilibrium is being upset by the overexploitation of plant resources, the transformation of landscapes, the invasion of exotic species and the pollution of soils, water and the air.
We therefore urgently need to protect plants, without which we might see the permanent extinction of irreplaceable species and the irreparable loss of many ecosystems.
