Man and his
Genes opens the second season in
Challenges of the Living World at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie.
Today agriculture, food & food processing,
medicine and applications of genetic
engineering are all part of daily life.
Progress in our understanding of genes
has opened the way for new applications, and brought us new powers.
By exploring the bases of modern genetics and its challenges, the Cité
des Sciences promotes discussion and debate on the applications that result
for humanity, and raises awareness of the potentialand
risksof
genetic engineering.
"Man and his Genes"
opens at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie on May 15, 2002.
It was organized in conjunction with Axel Kahn, head of Institut Cochin
and a member of the French national advisory board on medical ethics. The
exhibition has four stages, inviting visitors to see, hear, touch and experiment.
Each stage starts with immersion in a red antechamber where visitors get
a first taste of the worlds they will be discovering.
"Man and his Genes"
is the second exhibition in a program running over several years at the
Cité des Sciences, examining challenges in biology and biotechnologies.
"The Challenges of the Living World" highlights
a new approach to education and debate launched by the Cité des Sciences.
Exhibitions are rounded out by debates and lectures, special events and
resource centers, plus regularly updated online presentations to help visitors
understand essential themes for today's world.
Starting with "Man Transformed", the Challenges
of the Living World cycle will continue with a third exhibition:
"Inside the Brain".
"Challenges of the
Living World" was produced in conjunction with the Ministry of Health,
CNRS, Inserm, the Pasteur Institute, AP-HP, Inra, the French institute
for transplants/graft, Génopole d'Evry, lCEA and the Fondation pour la
recherche médicale.
