Lifedrop is the result of a research project conducted by Jean-Claude Heudin. It centers on a drop of water containing microscopic creatures:
the Biomorphs
.
Lifedrop is not a simulation of organisms that actually exist, but the morphology and behavior of its inhabitants are based on fact.

Lifedrop is designed for two main purposes. Firstly, as a research tool to study development and complexity in biology. As such, it provides evidence for the hypothesis that evolution applies not only to to living organismes, but to any dynamic system that can be modeled as a network of agents. Secondly, Lifedrop is fun to play and makes visitors more aware of fundamental issues in science and philosophy - What is life? What is the difference between the virtual and the real? Can life exist in a computer?
