Experiences
The Archimedean screw
In ancient times, the Archimedean screw was turned by men or animals. It was used to raise water from wells or pump water out of the holds of ships... Today, it is operated with a motor. It is also used for raising sand, mud and wheat.
Its principle: a pipe is coiled into a spiral, like a big screw. When it is rotated, water rises with each turn of the handle.
Vis d'Archimede

The wall of gears
The gears transmit movement and enable direction and speed to be changed. The connecting rod (which makes locomotives move), the piston or the Maltese cross are mechanical systems used to transform movement. Gears are used in many machines: car transmissions, locomotives, drills, etc.
Mur d'engrenages

The manipulator
In the laboratory, the manipulator enables dangerous products such as radioactive substances to be remotely manipulated. The machine reproduces the movements of the user's hands, using cables that link the grip to the claw.
Telemanipulateur

Measure your speed
Equipped with photoelectric cells, this machine measures speed. Two light rays control a chronometer which starts when the first light ray is cut and stops when the second ray is obstructed.
The computer then calculates the speed of the runner between the two cells.
Mesure ta vitesse

Manufacture your badge
It takes just two minutes to manufacture a customised badge before your eyes. In series, four machines handle each stage in its manufacture: dispensing of the raw material (the sheet), engraving the name and the drawing, cutting the sheet, delivering the badge. The whole process is controlled by computer.

The electron microscope
The child observes the same samples as under the optical microscope and discovers the possibilities of this observational instrument, which enables exploration of the infinitely small.
